Jobs Hunting - Chapter One
What they know and wouldn't tell you...
Interview types
In this first part of 'The Hunt' I am going to start off by talking about Interview types, then in the next articles cover the Interview itself, Interviewers, Interview Psych 101 etc. and only then am I going to circle back and cover all the pre Interview items, like what to wear, what NOT to do on-line and all the other juicy tidbits that will turn you into a job hunter of note.
The Hunt article series will empower you to be ahead in the interviewing process but please note that the higher the job level the more varied the rules.
There are two main interview methods :
Behavior based employment interviews
The number one premise supporting behavior based interview screening is that the best way of predicting how a future employee will behave will be reflected in the behavioral patterns, under the same conditions, in the past. When conducting behavioral based interviews more than half of the interview deals with the prediction of future behavior of the candidate.
Traditional employment interview
Tell me about yourself, Why do you want to work here or even how would you respond in a given situation, are all indicative of the traditional interviewing methodology.
The Interview
Personally the traditional based interview methods are usually the ones anyone can Ace as we all can talk our way smoothly over all the traditional type interview questions.
These traditional interview questions are fairly much the same and one tends to build up a response library as your frame of reference and radar becomes more advanced and content rich.
You have to be very careful with behavioral based interviews as the questions probe your very personality and even little white lies will not stand up to a deep emotional quest for feelings that have to consistently reflect your very person.
Employers usually define a list of experiences, behaviors, knowledge, skills and abilities and when you find yourself in a behavior based interview, your answers have to be detailed and exact, do not try to sweet talk your way out of a direct answer to a difficult question, just answer it. It is not possible to prepare for a behavior based interview as it is with traditional interviews mainly because it is not so much about the job as it is about you the person. The best advice is to be honest, truthful and straightforward. Nobody is perfect and if you meet the requirements of the employer you do and if you do not you do not. These type of interviews also known in some circles as outcomes based interviews attempts to more thoroughly match the requirements of the employer with the real person that each of us are.
